KENT, Ohio – Kent State was able to make it a single-possession game after trailing by 12 with two minutes remaining but time expired to spoil a gritty comeback and Eastern Michigan left the M.A.C. Center with a 74-69 victory during Wednesday evening's Mid-American Conference women's basketball contest.
The Golden Flashes (7-6, 0-2 MAC) trailed 70-58 with only 2:07 on the clock but turned up the defense to force four turnovers and get within 72-69 on a corner three-pointer by Katie Shumate with 2.9 seconds left. However, the Eagles quickly grabbed the ball after it went through the net and got it to Jenna Annecchiarico before the defense could get set. Annecchiarico then sank two foul shots for the final score.
Trailing by 13 entering the final period, Kent State got back into the game by aggressively attacking the basket and earning frequent trips to the charity stripe. The Flashes shot a perfect 13-for-13 at the free throw line over the final 10 minutes and 27-for-33 overall on the night. A total of 58 fouls were called, resulting in 68 combined free throw attempts.
Kent State had five players score in double-figures. Redshirt senior Megan Carter led the way with 15 points and freshman Katie Shumate was right behind with 14. Sophomores Asiah Dingle and Lindsey Thall had 11 points each. Freshman Nila Blackford totaled 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Defensively, the Flashes had a season-high eight blocked shots and held EMU to 23.9-percent shooting on two-point attempts. Lindsey Thall recorded a season-best seven rejections and sophomore Mariah Modkins registered her first career block.
Kent State will return to the M.A.C. Center to host Western Michigan on Saturday. Tip is slated for 1 p.m. with the men's basketball game against Central Michigan to follow at 3:30 p.m.
