MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Kent State held first-place Central Michigan seven points under its season scoring average but was unable to hand the host Chippewas their first Mid-American Conference loss in a 71-58 setback Wednesday night inside of McGuirk Arena.
The Golden Flashes (14-10, 7-6 MAC) held Central Michigan to only six three-pointers, its third-lowest total of the season. Kent State also struggled to knock down shots from beyond the arc, going 4-for-20 on three-point attempts despite a 3-for-5 start to the night.
Sophomore Asiah Dingle scored a team-high 16 points. Redshirt senior Megan Carter and sophomore Lindsey Thall were right behind with 14 points each.
The opening period was an offensive shootout that saw both teams put 25 points on the scoreboard. CMU led 13-7 at the 6:54 mark but the Flashes tied it 30 seconds later following a three-point play conversion from Asiah Dingle and triple by Lindsey Thall. Kent State held the Chippewas scoreless over the final 2:44 of the period as Megan Carter provided the team's final six points.
A scoreless stretch of just more than three minutes during the second quarter allowed CMU to go ahead 37-29. The teams played even the rest of the period and the Flashes trailed 44-36 at halftime.
A 9-2 run out the locker room pushed the Chippewas' lead to double-digits for the rest of the night.
Kent State was outrebounded, 42-32. Freshman Katie Shumate grabbed a team-best seven boards. The Flashes committed 10 turnovers compared to 16 miscues for CMU.
The Flashes will play three of the next four games at the M.A.C. Center, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday against Miami. Seniors Sydney Brinlee, Megan Carter and Ali Poole will be honored prior to the game.
