KENT, Ohio — Kent State was outscored 14-5 over the final 3:49 of Wednesday evening's Mid-American Conference opener, and visiting Toledo was able to leave the M.A.C. Center with a 69-60 victory.
The Golden Flashes (8-2, 0-1 MAC) led for most of the first three quarters and took a 45-43 lead into the fourth. The Rockets, however, made half of their field goal attempts and went 12-of-16 at the foul line over the final 10 minutes to pull away.
Junior Katie Shumate sank a pair of free throws to even it at 51-51 at the 4:01 mark, but Quinesha Lockett put Toledo back ahead with a jumper on the ensuing possession. Turnovers on three of the next four possessions resulted in an eight-point deficit prior to a basket by sophomore Casey Santoro to get within 65-59 with 1:17 to play. The Rockets made four of six free throws on their next possession to push the lead to 10, and Santoro split a pair of shots from the line to account for the final score.
Senior Hannah Young had a double-double for the second game in a row and led Kent State with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Bridget Dunn added 13 points and blocked a pair of shots. The duo combined for all of the Flashes' three-pointers, as the team shot a season-low 25.0% (5-of-20) from behind the three-point line.
Kent State continued its dominance on the glass (43-33), finishing with its fifth rebounding margin of 10 or better on the season. Six Flashes joined Young with at least four boards in the contest.
The Flashes will seek their first conference victory on Saturday when they battle Western Michigan at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo.
