KENT, Ohio — Kent State dropped a 61-58 Mid-American Conference women's basketball contest at Miami on a Peyton Scott three-pointer at the buzzer on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (10-7, 9-5 MAC) played outstanding defense for the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter, holding the RedHawks to five points on 0-for-11 shooting from the floor.
Scott finally got the ball to go through the basket through contact on a drive to the basket and sank the free throw for a 58-58 tie with 51.7 seconds to play. Sophomore Katie Shumate was unable to connect on a three-point attempt and the ball went back to the hosts with 21.1 seconds left.
Kent State nearly got the ball back when Scott's dribble rolled towards the backcourt, but the sophomore was able to track it down in time, and timeout was called with 3.2 seconds remaining. Miami was able to get the ball for Scott again, and this time she sank a three-pointer from beyond the top of the arc for the win.
The Flashes controlled play near the basket and finished with a season-high 38 points in the paint and leading 18-6 in second chance scoring. Making shots outside of the paint was a struggle, however. Kent State made a season-low two three-pointers and shot 12-of-25 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Nila Blackford scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and matched her career-high with four steals. Katie Shumate added 12 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior Hannah Young added 10 points to lead the Flashes to a 15-2 lead in bench scoring.
Kent State is scheduled to visit first-place Bowling Green for the final road game of the season on Wednesday, March 3.
