Flashes Take Down Ohio with Dominant Third Quarter

ATHENS, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team (8-3, 6-3 MAC) defeated Ohio 3-2 Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field.
The Bobcats got on the board first with a goal from Katelyn Whittle early in the second quarter. Ohio had other opportunities to extend their lead but senior goalkeeper Azure Fernsler denied the Bobcats attack keeping the score at 1-0.
Kent State's offense immediately put pressure on Ohio after halftime, but the Bobcats goalkeeper Nele Graner made a nice kick save to hold onto the lead.
The Flashes finally broke through at the 34:37 minute mark with a goal from Helena Cambra Soler to tie the game at 1-1. Kent State caught fire after that. They continued to pour on two more goals in the next five minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Ohio's Tasmin Williams scored late in the third to make it 3-2, but the Flashes held on for the victory.
Kent State led in total shots (10-9), shots on goal (8-4), and penalty corners (6-1). Three different Flashes registered two shots on goal, but sophomore Sydney Washburn stole the show scoring Kent State's second goal and assisting on the third alongside junior Sydney Carr.
The Flashes face off against Ohio again tomorrow, Saturday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m.
