LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Former Kent State men's golf standouts Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes will represent Canada in competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, as the International Golf Federation recently announced the 60-golfer field.
Kent State is one of only seven NCAA programs with multiple golfers in the Olympic field. Conners and Hughes are one of only four pairs of former college teammates headed to Tokyo. The duo led the Golden Flashes to match play and a tie for fifth at the 2012 NCAA Championships, which is the best finish in program history. Conners posted the top individual finish in program history, tying for fourth during stroke play.
During his Kent State career, Conners was a two-time All-American and his 72.94 career scoring average is the fifth lowest in program history. He was a two-time Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year and two-time MAC Championships individual medalist. A member of the PGA TOUR since 2018, Conners has posted 13 career top-10 finishes and won the 2019 Valero Texas Open. He tied for eighth at the Masters Tournament in April and was one of four golfers to finish in the top 10 in both Masters played over the past 12 months.
Hughes finished his Flashes career with a 73.67 career scoring average and was a three-time All-Region selection. He earned a victory in his first year as a PGA TOUR member, winning a three-hole playoff to capture the 2017 RSM Classic, and has posted 12 career top-10 finishes. Hughes advanced to the TOUR Championship for the first time in his career during the 2020 season. Earlier this month, he was tied for the lead entering the final round of the U.S. Open.
The second men's golf Olympic competition since 1904 will be a 72-hole tournament played at Kasumigaseki Country Club from July 29-August 1.
