Men’s Golf Sits Fourth Entering Final Round at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Junior Cade Breitenstine and graduate student Josh Gilkison both sit two shots off the individual lead through two rounds, as the Kent State men's golf team ended the first day of competition at the season-opening Gopher Invitational in fourth place.
The Golden Flashes are currently at 3-under par and six strokes ahead of fifth-place West Virginia. Kansas will enter Tuesday's final round with a five-stroke lead over the field after shooting 11-under on Sunday.
Kent State carded a collective 281 in the first round with three golfers under par. Only one Flash was under par in round two, but all four counting scores were within a stroke of par for a 284. The Flashes' long-ball striking helped them shoot 12-under on par-5 holes, which was the best score on the day.
Individually, Breitenstine and Gilkison both shot 3-under, 171 and are in a six-way tie for sixth place. Gilkison shared the low round of the day with a 67 during the first 18 holes and carded a 72 over the final 18 holes. Breitenstine followed a 68 in the opening round with a 71 in round two.
Senior Julien Paltrinieri sits two strokes behind his teammates with a 1-under, 141. Paltrinieri was Kent State's most consistent competitor with a 70 in the first round and then a 71 to close the day. He is tied for 18th.
Freshman Bryce Reed was the lone Flash under par in the second round with a 70. Reed is tied for 47th overall with a 6-over, 148. Junior Jack Doody enters the final round in a tie for 60th after carding a 9-over, 151 on Sunday.
The final round of the Gopher Invitational will be played on Monday. Kent State will begin on hole No. 1 with tee times from 9:05 a.m.-9:45 a.m. Live scoring can be tracked on GolfStat.

Junior Chris Vandette earned medalist honors to highlight three additional Flashes who completed the final two rounds of the Minnesota Golf Classic at nearby at the Pioneer Creek Golf Course. Vandette entered in a tie for 10th place after carding a 1-under, 71 on Saturday before rocketing up the leaderboard with an 8-under, 64 in round two. He carded a 5-under, 67 during the final round to win by three strokes. Freshman Jordan Gilkison birdied two of his final three holes to move in a tie for third with a 6-under, 210. Sophomore Luca Civello shot 8-over, 224 to finish tied for 39th.
