Kent State 3-2 victory over Longwood in shootout

FARMVILLE, VA – The Kent State field hockey team (7-7, 5-1 MAC) wins 3-2 against Longwood (3-12, 1-5 MAC) this evening after double overtime and a shootout.
In the first quarter, Katie Wuerstle scored the first goal of the game to put the Golden Flashes on the scoreboard. The Lancers and Flashes went scoreless in the second quarter. In the first half Kent State led in shots 5-1. Maria Cambra Soler scored her fourth goal of the season off a penalty corner, giving the Golden Flashes a 2-0 lead, in the third quarter. Five minutes into the fourth quarter, Longwood scored to bring the score 2-1. The Lancers tied the game with five minutes remaining in regulation to bring it to overtime.
After double overtime, Kent State and Longwood kept the score 2-2. Going into a shootout, Longwood missed the first shot and Wuerstle scored (1-0). For the second round, Longwood scored, and Sydney Washburn also made the shot (2-1). The Lancers scored again in the third round followed by a missed goal by Danielle Hamm (2-2). In the final round, Longwood missed, and Jenna McCrudden was successful (3-2). Cecile van Eijck saved the next stroke by the Lancers and the Golden Flashes won 3-2.
The Flashes led in shots (26-9), shots on goal (17-6), and corners (7-0).
Kent State takes on Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 12 p.m.
