
Volleyball Pushes Toledo to Five Sets on Senior Night

KENT, Ohio โ After scoring five in a row to send it to a fifth set, Kent State lost to Toledo, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 26-24, 11-15), on Senior Night Friday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (13-14, 4-12 MAC) were led by middle blockers Lana Strejcek and Sadie Wright, who combined for a .438 hitting percentage and helped total the most blocks (14) against a Mid-American Conference opponent this season. Strejcek recorded a career-high 16 kills and nine total blocks to match her career-high. Wright added a career-high nine kills and four blocks.
Graduate student Alex Haffner notched her 11th double-double of the season with 53 assists and 15 digs.
Graduate student Erin Gardner tallied 16 digs to lead the back row. Senior Gracey Jarecke (15), junior Bryn Roberts (12) and senior Savannah Matthews (10) all added double-digit digs.
How it Happenedโฆ
ย ย ย Set 1: Kent State won the first three points of the night for a lead it refused to relinquish. Toledo tied it on two occasions and got within 20-19 late, but the Golden Flashes answered with kills on the next three points by Bryn Roberts, Mia Soerensen and Sadie Wright. Soerensen added two more kills to give Kent State a 25-21 victory.
ย ย ย Set 2: The Flashes led by as many as five in the second set, but Toledo went ahead with a 10-3 run. The Rockets pushed their lead to five at one point and won, 25-21.
ย ย ย Set 3: A 7-0 run allowed Toledo to pull away after the teams split the first 14 points of the set. The Flashes posted a .000 hitting percentage with nine kills and nine attack errors.
ย ย ย Set 4: Kent State went on a 6-0 run after the teams split the first 20 points, but the Rockets stormed back for a 24-21 lead and three chances at match point. Following a service error, Lana Strejcek recorded a kill and Toledo committed an attack error to tie it up. Strejcek and Alex Haffner combined for a block to take the lead, and then Strejcek delivered a kill for the 26-24 win.
ย ย ย Set 5: In a set of runs, the Flashes trailed 7-2 before scoring six in a row and taking the lead on a kill by Mackenzie McGuire as the teams flipped sides of the court. Toledo answered by winning the next five points and led 13-9 after alternating the ensuing two points. Kent State appeared to have one final run left, trimming it to 13-11 on a kill by Morgan Copley and ace by Bryn Roberts. The Rockets took the next two points, however, to end the match.

Kent State will honor its four super seniors Saturday night following the final home game of the season against Toledo at 4 p.m.
