ATHENS, OHIO- The Golden Flashes and Ohio Bobcats split a pair of slugfests at Bob Wren Stadium, with Kent State winning game one 14-7 and Ohio taking game two, 16-12.
GAME ONE: Kent State 14 Ohio 7
The Golden Flashes knocked out 17 hits in the game one win with all nine starters getting at least one base hit. Kent State overcame a six-run Bobcat second inning in the win.
Michael McNamara started the onslaught in the comeback with a two-run homer in the third, tying the game at six. After a quiet fourth and fifth inning, the Flashes erupted for five in the sixth. Kent State had five hits in the inning with the top of the order, Kyle Jackson, Justin Kirby and Aidan Longwell all delivering run-scoring singles. They added three insurance runs in the seventh with Connor Ashby and Kirby with run-scoring hits. Ben Cruikshank got the win, going the final three and a third innings in relief. The lefty allowed one earned while striking out seven in the victory.
GAME TWO: Ohio 16 Kent State 12
Kent State jumped out early in game two, striking for four runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Aidan Longwell. Ohio answered right back, scoring three in the first and two more in the second to grab a 5-4 lead.
McNamara once again helped bring the Flashes back. He scored the tying run in the third on a Mack Timbrook double and homered again in the fifth to give the Flashes the lead. Ohio answered with five of their own in the fifth and one more in the sixth to lead 11-6. Kent State roared back with a five-run seventh. Josh Johnson started the rally with a run-scoring double and Ashby followed with a two-run single. Kyle Jackson completed the comeback with a two-run shot to tie the game at 11. But Ohio would have the final rally. The Bobcats took advantage of a pair of walks and plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The teams traded runs in the eighth, but it would be Ohio that took the nightcap.
