KENT, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team hosted Central Michigan on Senior Day at Dix Stadium on Saturday for their final home game of the season. But despite a strong showing and early lead, the Golden Flashes couldn't quite get past the second-ranked Chippewas, falling 14-10.
Prior to the start of the game, 12 members of Kent State lacrosse were honored in their last game in front of their home fans. They are as follows:
Kelli Bailey, Meghan Cawood, Abby Jones, Megan Kozar, Pilar Lewis, Eva Nikolai, Lexi Piekarski, Madison Rapier, Regan Russell, Katie Stachler, Claire Welter, and Anna Woodhams. 11 of the 12 also started the game for Kent State.
Abby Jones and Megan Kozar had especially nice Senior Days, with Jones, the all-time Flashes goal leader, scoring four times in this one, while Kozar's two goals gave her 100 career points in a Kent State uniform. Both players were instrumental in the Flashes taking control of the first quarter, as each picked up a goal in the period en route to a 3-1 lead headed into the second period.
Central Michigan would respond with five goals in the second quarter, including two from attacker Reagan Martinsen (one in the form of a player-up goal). Martinsen would finish with three goals in the contest, as she tacked on an additional player-up goal in the fourth quarter.
Martinsen was one of three Chippewas to pick up a hat trick, as midfielder Maggie Diebold and midfielder Audrey Whiteside accomplished the feat as well. Whiteside also had two assists, giving her a total of five points in the game. Jones had five points as well for Kent State, thanks to her four goals (one in every quarter) and an assist on junior Morgan Kubicki's player-up goal with 1:09 left to go in the third quarter.
At halftime, the score was knotted at six-all. After eight goals were scored in the second quarter, the two sides combined to score nine goals in the third quarter. Unfortunately for Kent State though, six of the nine goals were scored by Central Michigan, leaving the Golden Flashes with a three-goal deficit heading into the final period. The Chippewas would add two goals in the fourth quarter, while Jones' fourth score of the game would be Kent State's only goal in the final period. Thus, Central Michigan would leave Dix Stadium with the victory, 14-10.
At goalkeeper, CMU's Alexa Martel got the win with eight saves. Kent State's Taylor Monturo got stuck with the loss despite 16 saves. A total of seven cards were also given out in this one, with the Flashes being given four yellow cards and a green card, while Central Michigan received one of each.
While no loss is ideal, Kent State still has a clear path to the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Golden Flashes sit solidly in the number four slot in the conference rankings, with four teams making the postseason and both fifth-place Akron and sixth-place Detroit Mercy losing on Saturday. Kent State also faces off with Detroit Mercy in its final regular season game on April 30.
That Detroit Mercy matchup is one of the Flashes' final two games left on its schedule. The other is their next one on the schedule, coming next Saturday against third-ranked Youngstown State. That game is set to take place at 1 p.m.
