Flashes look to preserve perfection at MAC Championship

HOLLAND, OH.... In 1999, the Mid American Conference held its first ever women's golf championship at Kings Island in Mason Ohio, with Kent State becoming the first ever team to hoist the trophy.
Since that day 22 conference competitions have been held, and incredibly, the Flashes have won every single one.
The Kent State women's golf team will look to make it 23 in a row in Holland this weekend, entering this year's MAC Championship fresh off a second place team finish at the Lady Buckeye Invitational last week.
"We're excited, it's been a long season and it's all led up to this so this is a new start," Flashes head coach Casey VanDamme said. "We have a great tradition here at Kent State that we hope to continue."
This year's team features some of the best golfers in the conference thanks to Emily Price and Chloe Salort who finished first and second individually in Columbus last weekend.
"Having two seniors with experience and elite talent is a really nice thing to have," VanDamme said. "That steady play in the one and two spots has been so great for us all year and they've been playing their best golf down the stretch."
While Price and Salort have dominated the headlines, steady play from Noramol Nuchsila, Mayka Hoogeboom, Jennifer Gu and Valentina Albertazzi has lifted the Flashes to a solid spring against some of the best programs in the country.
"Overall our team has looked better this spring than we did in the fall and we're hoping that continues in the postseason," he said.
While this year's field of ten will feature some stellar competition, Kent State must focus on the task at hand if they are to secure an unheard of 23rd straight conference crown.
"We always try to focus on controlling what we can control," VanDamme said. "We don't get to play defense in our sport and there are no scouting reports, it's us against the course and our ladies understand that well."
The Flashes will be paired with Central Michigan and Northern Illinois with competition beginning on Friday at 9:00 AM. Fans can follow live scoring at golfstat.com and the final round on Sunday will be broadcast on ESPN3.
