KENT, Ohio - On Saturday, the Kent State lacrosse team travels to western Pennsylvania to take on the Robert Morris Colonials at 12 p.m. in a Mid-American Conference matchup.
About the Flashes
Kent State enters the weekend on a bit of a hot streak, having won their last three contests, two of which coming against conference opponents. In their game on Saturday, the Golden Flashes defeated rival Akron at home, 10-9. The game was one of the most exciting of the season for the Flashes, with junior Kenzie Sklar scoring the game-winning goal with 15 seconds to go, causing the team and the crowd to erupt in jubilation.
The victory served Kent State well, as they sit at 2-4 within the MAC and hold sole possession of fourth place and the final postseason spot. The goal by Sklar was her 27th of the season, an amazing total in its own right. However, sophomore Jackie Wolford holds the team lead in scoring with 33 goals, with her 2.54 goals-per-game average putting her in fourth place in scoring in the MAC.
In the Akron game, sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Monturo also got her first decision and win of the season, filling in for junior Madison Flannigan.
About the Colonials
Robert Morris currently sits at a perfect record of 6-0 within the MAC thus far in 2022, positioning themselves nicely in first place in the conference. With less than a month left to go in the regular season, the Colonials have all-but clinched a spot in the MAC postseason tournament, holding a four-game lead over the fourth place Flashes for the final playoff spot. What's surprising about Robert Morris though is the wide disparity between their performance in-conference versus outside of the MAC. While the Colonials have a spotless record within the MAC, they're actually winless outside of the conference, losing six of six non-MAC games. But when it comes to the MAC postseason, only conference records matter, so RMU's out-of-conference struggles won't hinder their postseason chances.
In the Colonials' last outing on Saturday, they went on the road and defeated Detroit Mercy, 13-8. In that game, midfielder Jenna Irwin scored four goals and had an additional assist to propel Robert Morris to victory. That contributed to her season total of 29 through 11 games, averaging 2.64 goals per game, good enough for third place in the MAC.
When Kent State hosted Robert Morris at Dix Stadium on March 2, the Colonials got the best of the Flashes, 11-8, despite three goals by Jackie Wolford.
The Flashes are still looking for their first win against the Colonials, having fallen in all five lifetime matchups.
