Mount Pleasant, Mich. - The Kent State lacrosse team prepares for its first ever postseason game on Thursday, when they'll take on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant at 1 p.m. in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.
About the Golden Flashes
Kent State has endured a long and winding journey to reach this point. The Golden Flashes extended the season by at least one more game on Saturday, when they defeated Detroit Mercy, 16-15. This win secured the Flashes with the fourth and final postseason spot in the MAC Tournament, staving off an attempt by Detroit Mercy to grab the spot instead. The win was highlighted by the 39th and 40th goals of the season by sophomore Jackie Wolford, breaking the Kent State record. The victory also gave the Flashes the most wins in program history.
After beating the Titans on the road to clinch a playoff spot, Kent State and head coach Brianne Tierney had plenty of reason to celebrate. But now, as another win-or-go-home game looms on the horizon against Central Michigan on Thursday, it will be all business for the Flashes.
About the Chippewas
Central Michigan was able to grab the number one seed in the MAC Tournament thanks to a convincing win over Akron on Saturday and a Robert Morris loss to Youngstown State. This caused the Chippewas, who had been sitting in second place for most of the season, to jump over the Colonials and claim the rights to host the postseason tournament in Mount Pleasant.
And Central Michigan certainly deserves credit for what they've been able to accomplish this year, registering a record of 10-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play. Maggie Diebold finished the regular season second in the MAC in goals with 57 and in shots with 126. Audrey Whiteside also finished second in the MAC in assists per game (1.82) and points per game (4.12).
Both times that the Flashes and Chippewas faced off this season, Central Michigan got the better of Kent State. After a victory over the Flashes in Mount Pleasant on March 10, the Chippewas beat Kent State again on Senior Day on April 16, 14-10.
