BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Maia Sarrabayrouse converted a one-timer off a pass from freshman Patricia Strunk during the seventh minute of overtime as the Kent State opened the 2022 season with a 1-0 victory over host Indiana on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Cecile van Eijck was a brick wall in the cage and made 11 saves, including two huge stops in the final minute of regulation.
Just over six minutes into the extra period, Strunk poked the ball away from a Hoosier player near midfield and ran the ball down on the sideline before sending a pass into the circle to a streaking Sarrabayrouse, who was able to score in the bottom left corner of the cage.
Kent State held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners and was outshot 14-6.
The Golden Flashes (1-0) will be right back in action at 12 p.m. Friday against No. 6 Liberty.
