
Hodrick Sprints to MVP Honors at MAC Outdoor T&F Championships

AKRON, Ohio – Kent State's Asa Hodrick claimed three golds and scored 24.5 points to earn the Most Valuable Performer award at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Golden Flashes sat atop the team standings for much of the final day of competition but finished second with 161 points.
Hodrick helped Kent State open the day on the track with a victory in the 4x100-meter relay. He teamed with Logan Doyle, Dejon Manning and Jonathan Solomon to finish in 40.11 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in program history.
In his first individual final on Saturday, Hodrick repeated as the 100-meter dash champion with a time of 10.40 seconds. He then ran a personal-best 20.58 seconds, which is the No. 6 time on the Flashes' all-time performance list, to capture the 200-meter dash gold. Hodrick closed the day in the leadoff spot for the 4x400-meter relay, joining Kyle Sommer, Solomon and Quintin Cooks to finish second in 3:11.91.
Alexandre Malanda soared to the triple jump title with a season-best mark of 51'3.5".
Korie Davis II clocked the second-fastest 400-meter dash time in school history and finished second with a time of 46.64 seconds. Davis II added a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 54.25 seconds.
In a photo finish, Alexander Shields took second in the 110-meter hurdles. Shields' time of 14.090 seconds was 0.004 seconds behind Eastern Michigan's Payne Wylie.
Cooks ran a strong 800-meter race and placed second in 1:51.36.
Nolan Landis rounded out Kent State's all-conference performers, placing second in the discus throw with a mark of 164'-7".
Dejon Manning placed third in both short sprints, running a PR of 21.15 seconds in the 200m and clocking a 10.77 in the 100m.
Ayden Bath tied his personal-best in the high jump and cleared 6'-7.75" to finish third.
Baidy Ba placed third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:47.72 that beat the previous facility record. Shadrack Kipkosgei also beat a facility record in the 5,000-meter run. Kipkosgei crossed the finish line in 14:29.37 for seventh place. His fastest time in a Kent State uniform puts him at No. 7 on the all-time performance list.
The Flashes will continue postseason competition with qualifying student-athletes in action at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida from May 24-27.
