Kent State continues Mid-American Conference women's basketball action on Saturday with a trip to Bowling Green for a 4 p.m. contest at the Stroh Center.
The Golden Flashes (12-5, 6-1 MAC) have won two in a row and enter the weekend two games ahead of the Falcons and tied for second with Toledo in the conference standings. Junior Jenna Batsch scored 12 of her career-high 20 points during the third quarter to help Kent State win on Wednesday for just the second time this season when trailing at halftime. Batsch, who did not make a field goal during the first 20 minutes, played the entire second half and shot a career-high 10 free throws in the 66-57 victory over Eastern Michigan.
Kent State has been terrific on the defensive side of the ball and leads the MAC in opponent field goal percentage (.369) and opponent three-point field goal percentage (.284), while ranking second in points allowed (60.1 ppg), rebounding margin (+4.6) and turnover margin (+4.2).
Preseason All-MAC First Team guard Katie Shumate leads the Flashes with averages of 13.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Forward Jenna Batsch has been among the most improved players in the MAC this season and is averaging 12.9 points per game. Guard Corynne Hauser (10.1 ppg) owns a 1.71 assist-to-turnover ratio and is averaging 4.5 assists per game to rank third and fourth in the conference, respectively. Forward Janae Tyler (9.1 ppg) is one of the top scorers among reserve players in the MAC, while center Mikala Morris (8.3 ppg), and forward Bridget Dunn (6.8 ppg) have also posted multiple double-digit scoring performances. Dunn averages a career-high 6.6 rebounds per game and leads the Flashes with 28 three-point field goals.
Scouting Bowling Green
The Falcons (10-7, 4-3 MAC) return to the friendly confines of the Stroh Center, where they have posted a 5-1 record this season, after back-to-back road losses to Miami and Buffalo. Bowling Green will try to avoid its first three-game skid since the start of the 2021-22 season. The only other time the Falcons have dropped consecutive contests this season was setbacks to No. 1 South Carolina and No. 16 Indiana in December.
Bowling Green is the only team with four the top-20 MAC scorers. Guard Amy Velasco leads the way with 13.8 points and 4.3 assists per game. Guard Morgan Sharps scores 12.2 points per game and team-high 32 three-pointers, while guard Paige Kohler (10.6 ppg) and forward Erika Porter (10.0 ppg) have been impactful in their first season for the Falcons.
