Harrisonburg, Va. – The Kent State field hockey team opened a two-match weekend road trip on Friday visiting James Madison. The Flashes fell to the Dukes 3-0 in a closely contested match.
The first quarter featured an even attacking effort by both sides. James Madison narrowly out-shot the Flashes 3-2 in the period but were able to find the game's opening goal through a penalty stroke 11 minutes into the match. With the score at 1-0 entering the match's second quarter, the Flashes continued to attack, registering four shots and four penalty corners. However, the Flashes were unable to find the back of the cage, keeping the scoreline at 1-0 entering the second half.
The final half was much of the same for the Flashes, registering four shots and five penalty corners over the final two quarters, but they were unable to break the seal in front of the Duke's goal. Just three minutes into the second half, James Madison doubled their lead through their second successful penalty stroke of the match. The Dukes further strengthened their advantage eight minutes later, scoring their first goal from open play through a deflected effort to establish a 3-0 advantage, which they held through the final buzzer.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround as they will face no. 4 Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Columbus.
