COLUMBUS, Ohio β The Kent State field hockey team wrapped up a three-match road stretch on Sunday, visiting no. 4 Ohio State. The Buckeyes claimed a 3-0 victory over the Flashes, displaying why they are one of the best teams in the nation.
The Buckeyes established a consistent offensive presence in the first half, as they took the lead just six minutes into the match through a quality solo effort. The Flashes struggled to maintain possession in the attacking half as Ohio State continually imposed their will throughout the opening two quarters, doubling their lead four minutes into the second quarter. Kent State held strong defensively for the remainder of the first half to keep the score at 2-0 entering halftime.
The beginning of the second half saw the Flashes put together their best offensive spell of the match, but they were unable to generate a dangerous attempt at goal. Despite being unable to break the seal on the Buckeye goal, the Kent State defense remained solid throughout the second half to keep the match within arm's length. Ohio State found the back of the cage just one time in the second half despite registering 12 shots. Goalkeeper Lieve Jansen tallied four saves, and defender Elise Bearance recorded a defensive save to highlight a strong second-half defensive effort by Kent State, limiting the final scoreline to 3-0.
In the end, the Flashes' defense did well to limit a Buckeye offense that has scored four or more goals in eight matches this season en route to an 11-1 record.
The Flashes will return to action at Murphy-Mellis Field on Friday at 2 p.m. as they host MAC foe Central Michigan for cancer awareness day.
