KENT, Ohio โ The Kent State field hockey hosted Appalachian State on Friday at Murphy-Mellis Field in the team's third MAC conference game of the 2024 season. The visiting Mountaineers escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Flashes in a matchup of teams previously unbeaten in conference play.
The match began with an even first quarter as both teams registered a single attempt at goal. Despite efforts by both sides, the game remained scoreless entering the second quarter. As the first half commenced, App State was able to develop a consistent attacking presence, outshooting the Flashes 3-0 in the second quarter. Freshman goalkeeper Lieve Jansen responded to the Mountaineer's efforts with two saves to enter halftime scoreless.ย
The second half followed a similar script, with App State continuing to apply pressure to the Flashes' goal. Jansen once again had a counter to the Mountaineer's three shots on goal in the third quarter, tallying three more saves as the match remained scoreless heading into the final quarter of play.
Just 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, the seal in front of the Kent State goal was broken as App State found the game's opening goal to take a 1-0 lead. As the fourth quarter continued, the Flashes could not find an answer to the Mountaineers' offense, ultimately getting outshot 9-0 in the final period. Jansen recorded four more saves to keep the match within reach for Kent State, bringing her final tally to nine saves. However, the Flashes were unable to find an equalizing goal, concluding the match with a 1-0 defeat.
Friday's victory improved App State to 4-0 in MAC conference play, putting the Mountaineers atop the conference standings.
The Flashes will return to action on Sunday, with a short road trip to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 1 p.m.
