KENT, Ohio - The Kent State field hockey team (2-7) is set to continue MAC conference play as they host App State on Friday at Murphy-Mellis Field before traveling to East Lansing, Michigan for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Michigan State. Friday's match with the Mountaineers is set to begin at 2 p.m. while Sunday's contest with the Spartans will start at 1 p.m.
About the Flashes
Kent State improved to 2-0 in MAC conference play last Friday, defeating Longwood 2-1 in the team's first road victory of the season. The Flashes ended the weekend road trip with a 3-1 defeat at Wake Forest, a match in which Kent State held a brief 1-0 lead in the second quarter. All three of the Flashes' goals across the two matches were scored by sophomore midfielder Eva Usoz, earning her MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Both of her goals in the Longwood victory were unassisted at the end of plays where she bypassed multiple defenders with the ball. Her goal in the Wake Forest match was a successful penalty corner play, assisted by Emma Rolston and Arden Goddard-Despot. Usoz now has team-leading totals of five goals and 13 points in the 2024 season.
Scouting App State
The Mountaineers enter Friday's match on a four-match win streak, propelling them to a 3-0 start in MAC play. Due to the effects of Hurricane Helene, App State faced Central Michigan on Sunday and Bellarmine on Monday in matches contested in Charlotte, North Carolina. They defeated Central Michigan 2-1 before ending the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Bellarmine. The Mountaineers boast a balanced attack, as six players have point totals of six or greater, led by senior forward Charlotte Bosma's four goals and two assists.
Scouting Michigan State
After starting Big Ten conference play 0-2, the Spartans recorded two overtime victories over MAC opponents last week. They visited Muncie, Indiana on Sunday, defeating Ball State 2-1 through an overtime winner. Michigan State then hosted Miami on Tuesday, clinching a 2-1 victory with a goal in the second overtime period. The Spartans have three joint-team leaders with ten points in Emma O'Neill, Bianca Pizano, and Ellie Rutherford.
The Series
The Flashes are 12-2 in the all-time series with App State. Kent State recorded a 3-2 overtime victory in the previous meeting between the two teams during last season's MAC Tournament.
The Spartans hold a 26-9-2 advantage in the all-time series between the schools. The Flashes won last season's matchup between the sides 1-0 at Murphy-Mellis Field.
