OXFORD, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team concluded regular season play on Friday with a trip to Miami. The Flashes fell 2-0 to the RedHawks in their final contest ahead of postseason play.
The first quarter of the match featured very limited offensive action from either side, with neither team recording a shot in the opening period. As the second quarter commenced, the RedHawks began to establish an offensive presence in the match. Kent State freshman goalkeeper Lieve Jansen made two saves in the period, but Miami was able to find the match's opening goal to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
As the third quarter began, the RedHawks continued to put their foot on the gas pedal. Miami out-shot the Flashes 11-1 in the period, forcing six more saves from Jansen in the cage. The RedHawks strengthened their advantage with a second goal ten minutes into the third quarter, taking a 2-0 lead. The Flashes controlled possession and generated chances with greater success in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late, as they were unable to find their way onto the scoresheet and the match finished 2-0. With another save in the final period, Jansen amassed an impressive final tally of nine saves.
The Flashes finish the regular season with an overall record of 6-11 and 5-3 in MAC conference play. Despite today's defeat, Kent State remains the four seed at next week's MAC field hockey championship in Oxford, Ohio. The Flashes will begin their pursuit of the championship with a quarterfinal match set for Wednesday, November 6.
