The Kent State field hockey team (6-11, 5-3 MAC) heads to Oxford, Ohio this week to kick off postseason play with the MAC Field Hockey Championship. The Flashes will face Ball State in the quarterfinal on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. With a victory, Kent State would advance to face James Madison in the semifinal on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
About the Flashes
Kent State enters the MAC Championship as the four-seed, clinching their spot in the tournament ahead of last Friday's regular-season finale at Miami. The Flashes fell 2-0 to the RedHawks in a game that ultimately had no effect on their postseason seeding. In a match where Kent State struggled to get going offensively, freshman goalkeeper Lieve Jansen impressed in the cage, notching nine saves in 60 minutes of play. Following the conclusion of the regular season, four Flashes were named to All-MAC teams on Tuesday afternoon. Eva Usoz and Agustina Florio earned All-MAC first and second team selection respectively while Lieve Jansen and Delfina Larripa were each named to the MAC All-Freshman team.
Scouting Ball State
Ball State enters Wednesday's match as the five-seed with a 5-12 overall record and a 4-4 record in MAC play. The Cardinals ended their regular season with a 2-1 victory at Bellarmine to clinch their spot in the MAC Championship. In September, Ball State faced the Flashes at Murphy-Mellis Field, a match which ended 1-0 in favor of the Flashes. Emma Van Hal leads the Cardinals offensively with nine goals and 22 points, while Hannah Johnston has played every minute in goal this season, amassing 146 saves.
Scouting James Madison
James Madison, who the Flashes would play in a potential semifinal match, has a first-round bye in the MAC Championship as the one-seed after posting a 13-5 overall record and a 7-1 record in MAC play, including a 3-0 victory over the Flashes in October. The Dukes concluded the regular season on Sunday with their first and only MAC defeat of the season against App State by a score of 4-3. James Madison is led by Alice Roeper, who was just named MAC Offensive Player of the Year after posting 14 goals, five assists, and 33 points.
The Series
The Flashes hold a 41-33 advantage in the all-time series over Ball State. With the 1-0 victory earlier this season, Kent State extended their win streak over the Cardinals to 15 matches.
Kent State is 4-11 all-time against the Dukes. The regular season match between the teams, won 3-0 by James Madison, was the first time the two teams had met since 2014.
