RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite only having nine players in uniform Thursday night at Reynolds Coliseum, Kent State trailed by just 12 entering the fourth quarter in a 79-51 setback to No. 13 NC State.
Led by seniors Bridget Dunn and Jenna Batsch, the Golden Flashes (1-2) drained eight shots from behind the three-point line during the opening 20 minutes and trailed 33-28 at halftime.
After NC State pushed its lead to 17 in the final minute of the third period, Batsch scored five in a row to get within 56-44.
The shorthanded Flashes were unable to score again until a pair of free throws by freshman Meghan Murray with 2:22 remaining as the Wolfpack opened the final quarter with a 14-0 run.
Dunn made a career-high five three-pointers and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Kent State. Batsch added 15 points and three assists.
Kent State will finish the road trip against Elon on Saturday.
