
Flashes Drop MAC-SBC Challenge Contest to Monarchs

KENT, Ohio — Redshirt senior Katie Shumate posted her fourth double-double of the season Saturday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center as Kent State fell to visiting Old Dominion, 82-76, in a MAC-Sun Belt Challenge contest.
Shumate led all players with 26 points and 12 rebounds, tying her season-high in both categories. The Newark, Ohio native also moved to eighth on the program's career leaders list in both categories and now has 1,671 points and 748 rebounds.
The Golden Flashes (14-7) recorded three steals in the first two minutes and jumped out to a 5-0 lead but trailed 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Sophomore Dionna Gray sank a pair of free throws to give Kent State its largest lead of the second quarter, 28-25, with 3:13 before halftime. The Flashes missed their next six shots as the Monarchs went ahead by five in the final minute. Junior Jenna Batsch drained a corner three-pointer to end the scoring drought and get within 33-31 at the break.
Kent State scored 26 points on 69.2% shooting from the floor in the third quarter and led by 10 with 1:42 remaining in the period. The Monarchs were able to get within six entering the fourth and started the final quarter with a 22-6 run. The Flashes made their next four shots to make it 80-76 but were unable to complete the comeback.
The Flashes will next be in action at Central Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 17.
