Soccer Set to Square Off with Oakland

Kent, Ohio- The Kent State Golden Flashes soccer team returns home to face the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Sunday, August 25 at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Kent State soccer team opened the road portion of the 2024 campaign with a 2-2 draw against the Penguins of Youngstown State. It was a back-and-forth game that saw two Kent State goals sandwiched between Youngstown State goals.
It was a physical game that saw both teams in double digit fouls (16-11 YSU) and tied with two yellow cards a piece. Kent State did create more opportunities in the attacking third leading Youngstown in shots (20-8), shots on goal (8-4), and corner kicks (5-1).
Morgan Magic
Josie Morgan has been a spark off the bench for the Flashes so far this season. The sophomore has scored in both games off the bench in 2024. Morgan dribbled the ball past the keeper and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net to score the first goal of the season in the 36th minute against Cleveland State and then headed in the equalizer in the 25th minute against Youngstown State.
The Team
Coach Rob Marinaro will bring back of their 11 starters and including 84% of their goals and 75% of their assists from last year. The midfield trio of Arthur, Raimondo, and Siena Stambolich all return to propel the offensive attack with the forwards Morgan and Mary Kate Lape.
Salopek, Ava Todd, and Joey Skillen return to form a defensive wall in front of goalkeeper Heidi Marshall.
The Flashes also welcome ten newcomers to campus, 7 freshman and 3 transfers. Emma Klain, Samantha Miller (Michigan State), Thea Helen Oberhoff (Daytona State), Addy Cusick, Jules Dolinski, Allison Burkey, Kate Thill (Bridgeport), Ali Weibel, Ava Lukyan, and Katie Henahan will all look to make an immediate impact on the field.
Scouting Oakland
The Golden Grizzlies were picked seventh in the Horizon League preseason poll following a 5-6-7 last season. Oakland is coming to Kent at 0-2-1 and in search of their first win of the young 2024 season. The Oakland offense is lead by junior, Frankie Mudd, who leads them in goals (one), shots (eight), and shots on goal (3).
Series History
Kent State leads the all-time series 3-1-1. The Flashes bested the Golden Grizzies 2-1 when the two teams met last year. Oakland did get the best of Kent state the last time these two teams met at Dix Stadium in 2022
