FARMVILLE, Va. – The Kent State field hockey team resumed MAC conference play on Friday with a road contest at Longwood. The Flashes secured a 2-1 victory through two Eva Usoz goals to improve to 2-0 in conference action.
Kent State came out firing in the first quarter, setting the tone with the match's opening goal just five minutes into the match. Eva Usoz recovered a loose ball along the end line before maneuvering between multiple Longwood defenders and firing a shot that found the back of the cage. Despite out-shooting the Lancers 5-1 throughout the first quarter, the Flashes were unable to hold the lead for long as Longwood found an equalizer just five minutes later via a penalty corner.
Entering the second quarter level at 1-1, the Flashes continued to put pressure on the Longwood goal. Kent State was able to find another breakthrough four minutes into the period once again through the stick of Usoz. The sophomore took matters into her own hands, navigating through multiple Longwood defenders in the area before firing a spectacular effort across goal to restore the Flashes' lead, which they were able to hold through the end of the half.
The offensive action slowed down on both sides as the second half commenced, with neither team recording a shot in the third quarter. Entering the final period with a 2-1 lead, the Kent State defense responded to repeated efforts by the Longwood attack to maintain the advantage and close out the Flashes' first road win of the season.
Usoz's two goals on the day improved her team-leading season totals to four goals and 11 points. Additionally, Friday's match marked the first time Kent State has scored multiple goals in a match this season.
Next up, the Flashes close out the weekend road trip as they head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on ACC foe Wake Forest on Sunday at noon.
