WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Kent State field hockey team closed out a weekend road trip on Sunday by visiting ACC opponent Wake Forest. The Flashes fell 3-1 to the Demon Deacons in a competitive match.
The story of the first quarter for Kent State was the performance of Lieve Jansen. The freshman goalkeeper came up huge to respond to a strong Wake Forest attacking surge to open the match. Jansen recorded six saves in the first quarter to keep the scoreline even at 0-0 after 15 minutes of play.
As the second quarter commenced, the Flashes were able to establish an offensive presence. Just four minutes into the quarter, Eva Usoz broke the deadlock with her fourth goal in three games to give Kent State a 1-0 lead. Usoz was assisted on the penalty corner play by Arden Goddard-Despot and Emma Rolston.
Just three minutes later, Wake Forest converted a penalty corner of their own to level the match 1-1. Following the equalizer, the Flashes' defense was able to hold strong and keep the scoreline level heading into halftime despite being outshot 12-3 in the first half.
The Demon Deacons were able to rebuild their offensive advantage in the second half, grabbing the lead for the first time ten minutes into the third quarter. With a 2-1 advantage established heading into the fourth quarter, Wake Forest continued to attack culminating in their third goal to put the match away just four minutes into the final quarter. Despite conceding two goals in the second half, Allison Wood kept the Flashes in the match with seven saves after replacing Jansen in goal at halftime.
