ATHENS, Ohio — Kent State matched the program record with 16 three-point field goals during a 79-64 victory over host Ohio on Saturday afternoon for its first road win during Mid-American Conference play.
The Golden Flashes (10-6, 3-1 MAC) had four different players contribute to the record-tying performance. Sophomore Mya Babbitt and freshman Journey Hildebrand led the way with five triples each, while seniors Jenna Batsch and Bridget Dunn sank three apiece. Dunn finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Batsch neared her second with a team-high 19 points and eight assists. Babbitt added 18 points and Hildebrand had 15, her most against a Division I opponent.
After a 2-of-8 shooting start, Kent State got a boost from Hildebrand, who knocked down a trio of three-point shots to help lead 20-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Ohio took a 36-34 advantage into the locker room at halftime on a buzzer-beater by Bailey Tabeling.
The Flashes took control with a dominant 17-0 run, which included a 5-of-5 stretch from three-point range, to open the third quarter. The lead reached 16 twice before the Bobcats closed the period with five straight points to make it 59-48 entering the fourth.
After the lead was trimmed to nine with 6:25 to play, Batsch scored four in a row and then found Babbitt for an open triple as part of an 8-0 run that prevented the host from putting together a comeback. Batsch's record-tying three-pointer at the 2:42 mark gave the Flashes their largest lead of the contest, 77-59.
Kent State dominated the glass with a 45-31 rebounding advantage. Sophomore Riley Rismiller and junior Tatiana Thomas grabbed six rebounds each to join Hildebrand in a productive game for the reserves.
The Flashes will host first-place Ball State for a key MAC matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
