OXFORD, Ohio — Four players scored in double-figures and two more added nine points each as Kent State defeated Miami, 77-63, in the 100th all-time meeting between the programs on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (13-7, 6-2 MAC) scored 33 points over the final 10 minutes to match the program record for points in a quarter against a Division I opponent that was set in the opening period of a contest at Northern Illinois on Feb. 21, 2021.
Senior Jenna Batsch led all scorers with 19 points and classmate Bridget Dunn registered her third double-double in the last five contests with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Playing the 100th game of her Kent State career, Dunn was on the court for all 40 minutes and added three blocked shots.
Both teams struggled to score for much of the first quarter, and the Flashes made four of their final five shots to lead 16-8 after 10 minutes.
Sophomore Mya Babbitt got scoring started in the second period with a deep three-pointer and then found classmate Janae Tyler for a fast break layup after coming up with a steal to make it 21-8 less than two minutes in. Following a scoring drought of more than five minutes, Kent State scored the final seven points of the half to take a 28-19 lead into the break.
A 10-0 run gave the Flashes the largest lead of the game at 44-29 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter, but the RedHawks closed with an 8-0 run to get within seven entering the fourth.
Kent State shot 13-of-17 from the field during the record-tying final period. Batsch led the way with 12 points in the quarter and Tyler added nine.
The Flashes went 28-of-53 overall and shot 50% or better in a game for the eighth time this season. Tyler finished with 13 points and Gray had 12. Babbitt and junior Tatiana Thomas added nine each.
Kent State will return to the M.A.C. Center for two games next week. The Flashes will host Eastern Michigan for Unity Day on Wednesday, Jan. 29 and will celebrate 50 years of women's basketball during the rivalry game against Akron on Saturday, Feb. 1.
