YPSILANTI, Mich. – Sophomore Nadia Miller and junior Christina Vigil led Kent State to a season-best 14 blocks during a 3-1 (14-25, 18-25, 25-23, 18-25) loss to host Eastern Michigan on Friday contest.
Miller totaled 10 blocks, including two solo rejections, for the most by a Golden Flash this season, while Vigil also had a career-high with eight blocks to go with 35 assists and 12 digs to come up just short of her first triple-double.
Kent State (7-11, 2-5 MAC) showed great fight despite the setback, rallying from a 23-20 deficit in the third set to extend the contest to the fourth. After overcoming a four-point deficit to even the score at 19-19, the Flashes trailed by three with their host just two points from completing the sweep. Vigil started the comeback effort with a heads-up kill and then teamed with Miller for a block. After a timeout, senior Mackenzie McGuire tied it with a kill. Junior Mercedez Brown put Kent State ahead with a strong swing that found the floor and followed with a roll shot off the block and to the ground for the 25-23 victory.
Three early service errors had the Flashes playing from behind in the fourth, and Eastern Michigan was able to close it out.
McGuire recorded 13 kills and 13 digs to lead the way in both categories. Brown finished with a career-high 11 kills.
Kent State will hit the road again next week with matches at Miami on Thursday and Friday.
