KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team returned to Murphy-Mellis Field on Friday, falling 6-4 to in-state rival Ohio. The Golden Flashes (3-9, 2-4) recorded their second-best scoring effort of the season in the game despite suffering defeat.
Kent State opened the scoring just over three minutes in as Emma Seger tallied her fourth goal of the season. The Bobcats responded with four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. Eva Usoz scored her fourth goal of the season with two minutes remaining in the first half to give the Golden Flashes a lifeline as Ohio took a 4-2 advantage to the halftime break.
The Bobcats would add two more goals in the third quarter to build a 6-2 lead. The Flashes were able to gain some momentum going into the final quarter of play as Lauren Conroy found the back of the cage with just one second remaining in the third quarter, the defender's fifth goal of the season. Despite a goal early in the fourth quarter by Marissa Skinner, Kent State's comeback fell just short as Ohio escaped with a 6-4 victory.
Defensively, Allison Wood had three saves in goal, while Emily Robertson and Mary Kate Finnan each added a defensive save.
Kent State will have a quick turnaround, as the team heads to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, on Sunday to face Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
