Flashes Suffer Tough Overtime Defeat to Longwood

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team returned to action on Sunday with the team's fourth game of conference play, falling 3-2 to Longwood in overtime. The Golden Flashes (2-8, 1-3) were statistically dominant for much of the game, but a clinical effort from the Lancers saw Longwood escape Murphy-Mellis Field with a victory.

Emma Rolston struck first for the Flashes, finding her team-high sixth goal of the season just under seven minutes into the opening quarter. Despite registering 14 shots in the first half, the Golden Flashes were unable to expand on their one-goal lead in the first half as the scoreline was 1-0 at the halfway point.

Midway through the third quarter, Longwood found the back of the cage on just their second shot of the day to knot the score at one goal apiece. Kent State retook the advantage early in the fourth quarter as Lauren Conroy deflected home an effort at goal from Delfina Larripa for Conroy's third goal of the season. The Flashes continued to sustain pressure on the Longwood cage through the fourth quarter, but were unable to find a third goal before the Lancers scored another equalizer with under three minutes remaining to force overtime.

Just two minutes and 36 seconds into the extra period, Longwood dealt the fatal blow, finding the back of the cage on the first shot by either team in overtime to secure a 3-2 win.

The Lancers converted four shots across the entire game for three goals, while the Flashes were left ruing missed opportunities after registering 28 shots and 18 on target in the contest.

Kent State will return to action on Friday, October 10, at 3 p.m. as the team heads to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine.
