CINCINNATI —The Kent State women's basketball team scored the final seven points on Friday night to hold off a comeback effort and beat host Xavier, 68-60, inside of the Cintas Center.
After trailing by as many as eight points in the second quarter, the Golden Flashes (2-2) battled back to take the lead on a basket by senior Tatiana Thomas with 1:00 on the clock. The Musketeers converted a contested layup on the other end of the floor, and they led 31-30 at halftime following empty possessions by each team.
Kent State held its host to just two baskets during the first five minutes after the break and took its largest lead to that point, 40-36, on a three-pointer by junior Mya Babbitt. Xavier evened it with 3:12 remaining in the third period before the Flashes scored the next nine to lead 52-43 after 30 minutes.
It was a one-possession game following a stretch of more than three minutes without a field when junior Riley Rismiller grabbed her sixth offensive board of the night and scored to make it 61-57. That remained the score until a three-pointer by Xavier with 1:06 to play.
Redshirt junior Corynne Hauser then answered with a three-point shot from the wing with 44.3 seconds on the clock. Freshman Rylee Kalocay provided the biggest defensive stop of the night with a steal, and the Flashes added four free throws while preventing Xavier from connecting on its final three shots.
Babbitt led Kent State in the scoring column for the third game in a row and finished with 16 points to go with a team-high four assists. Hauser added 14 points. Kalocay finished with a career-high 10 points. Rismiller grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Flashes post a 38-25 advantage on the glass.
The Flashes will be right back in action at the M.A.C. Center to host Niagara on Sunday, Nov. 16 for the third of four games during the current 10-day stretch. Tip is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
