COLUMBUS — Junior Mya Babbitt went off for a career-high 30 points to keep the game close for the majority of the first three quarters during Kent State's 88-68 loss to Ohio State on Wednesday evening.
Babbitt's elite shooting was on display with six three-pointers while going 9-of-13 from the field overall. Her 30 points are the most by a Golden Flash against a Power Four opponent since Lindsey Thall had 32 against the Buckeyes on Nov. 21, 2019.
Kent State (3-3) scored first on a layup by senior Dionna Gray, but Ohio State scored the next eight and led 18-12 after 10 minutes of play.
The Flashes went back ahead, 30-28, on a stepback three by Babbitt with 2:19 remaining in the second quarter. The Buckeyes tied it right away with a putback and knocked down three-pointers on their next two possessions to hold a 36-35 lead at the break despite another five points from Babbitt.
Kent State was whistled for six fouls over the first four minutes of the third period as the deficit reached double-digits for the first time. Five straight points by Babbitt a few minutes later got the Flashes within seven before Ohio State scored the final nine points of the quarter. The deficit remained at least 15 points the rest of the game.
Junior Janae Tyler joined her classmate in double-figures with 13 points. Senior Tatiana Thomas scored seven points and grabbed a team-high six boards to help the Flashes to a 34-29 rebounding advantage. Gray finished with seven assists and career-high two blocked shots.
After playing four games in the past 10 days, Kent State will have a relatively lengthy break and return to action on Monday, Nov. 24 with a road contest at Duquesne.
