MOBILE, Ala. – The Kent State men's golf team concluded their opening tournament of the Spring season on Tuesday with the third and final round of the Hal Williams Intercollegiate contested at RTJ Magnolia Grove Golf Club. The Flashes fired an impressive 12-under-par 272 in round three to conclude the event in second place at 24-under-par.
Kent State narrowly missed out on finishing atop the team leaderboard, as no. 15 SMU concluded their tournament at 25-under-par, one stroke ahead of the Flashes. Entering round three, the Mustangs held an eight-stroke advantage over the Flashes. However, a tournament-best team round of 12-under-par enabled the Flashes to nearly mount the large comeback.
Similar to much of the Fall, Isaiah Ibit continues to impress in his freshman season for Kent State. The Ontario native led the Flashes at the Hal Williams Intercollegiate, posting a 4-under-par 67 in round three to conclude the tournament at 9-under-par and tied for third place. He ended the event with a consistent round of five birdies to just one bogey.
Jordan Gilkison overcame a slow start in round three, 2-over-par through ten holes, with four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to end his tournament with a 2-under-par 69. With three consecutive rounds in the 60s, just like Ibit, Gilkison was able to finish tied for sixth place at 8-under-par.
Competing as an individual this week, Bryce Reed was the third Kent State golfer to record a top 12 finish. Reed tallied a 2-under-par 69, featuring three birdies and just one bogey, in round three for his third consecutive round of par or better to conclude the tournament at 6-under-par at tied for 12th place.
The joint-highest third-round score for Kent State on Tuesday came from Nolan Haynes, who matched Ibit's 4-under-par 67 with a six-birdie performance in the final round. Haynes' big final round enabled him to move up 22 spots on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 24th at 2-under-par.
Kent State's final score countable toward the team total in round three came from Ramiro Acevedo, who clinched the Flashes' fifth round of the day in the 60s with a 2-under-par 69. Acevedo recovered from an opening round 5-over-par 76 with back-to-back rounds of 69 to conclude the opening tournament of the Spring at 1-over-par and tied for 36th place.
The Flashes will return to action on March 16, as they head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to take part in the General Hackler Championship.
