KENT, Ohio — A halfcourt heave at the buzzer grazed the bottom of the net as Kent State was unable to overcome an 11-point deficit in a 64-62 setback to Miami during Saturday afternoon's Play4Kay game at the M.A.C. Center.
After falling behind by six early, the Golden Flashes (16-9, 8-4 MAC) went ahead with a 10-0 run and led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Kent State held the RedHawks without a field goal for more than a four-minute stretch during the second quarter and took a 32-27 lead into the halftime break.
Miami closed the third period with a 16-0 run to go ahead by 11 going into the final 10 minutes.
The Flashes' defense locked in and forced seven straight missed shots to start the fourth quarter as the deficit was trimmed to five with 4:29 remaining.
A three-pointer by senior Bridget Dunn brought Kent State within 61-59 with 22.7 seconds to play. Following two free throws, sophomore Mya Babbitt banked in a triple with 4.2 seconds remaining. Miami split two free throws, giving the Flashes a final chance to complete the comeback. Out of timeouts and having to go the length of the court, the ball was inbounded to Dunn near midway court. The senior took one dribble before launching a shot that was on line but short.
Sophomore Janae Tyler led Kent State with 18 points. Senior Jenna Batsch, who scored all eight of the Flashes' points during the third period, added 14 points and five assists.
The Flashes will return to action at Buffalo on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
