KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes baseball team opened their week with a dominant 21-3 victory over the Washington and Jefferson Monday night.
The Flashes jumped all over the Presidents scoring 16 runs in the bottom of the first. Luke Matthews opened the scoring when he scored from third on a wild pitch. Dom Kibler would follow it up with an RBI single, Hunter Klotz then ripped a 2-run triple over the head of the center fielder. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe then ripped an RBI single through the left side. Landon Tiesing would then clobber the first home run of his collegiate career to give the Flashes a 7-0 lead. Kent State's next five runs would come off three bases loaded walks and two hit by pitches. Tiesing and Kolton Schaller would both rip RBI singles and Matthews would bring in the last run of the inning on a groundout to the pitcher.
Kent State struck again in the bottom of the second on a Payton Ebbing RBI single up the middle.
The Presidents would get two in the top of the third, but the Flashes would answer right back in the bottom half with a Kolton Schaller solo homer and a Matt Thompson 2-run opposite field blast.
The two teams would exchange runs again in the fourth with Kent State scoring on an RBI single by Connor Ashby.
All 17 Kent State hitters who came to the plate either recorded a hit or a run scored.
On the mound for the Flashes redshirt freshman Ben Rabatin made his first collegiate start going 3.1 innings striking out two batters. Vince Waterman would follow up Rabatin making his collegiate debut pitching 1.1 shutout innings. Gannon Wentz pitched 1.1 shutout innings en route to his second week of the season. Jordan Kolenda would pitch a clean seventh inning to cose the game.
Monday's victory was the 373rd win of Head Coach Jeff Duncan's illustrious Kent State career. This ties him with Rick Rembielak for the most in Kent State history.
