HONORING A PAIR OF KENT STATE LEGENDS
Following the death of Varsity "K" Hall of Fame member Jud Logan '82 in 2022, Kent State made the decision to name one of its home meets each season in his honor. A four-year letter winner who qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1980 and won three individual Mid-American Conference throwing titles, Logan went on to represent the United States in the hammer throw at four Olympic Games. A member of the National Throws Coaches Association (NTCA) Thrower's Hall of Fame, he was five-time USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year recipient and led his teams to three national championships during his 17 years as head coach at Ashland University.
The Jud Logan-Al Schoterman LIGHT GIVER Scholarship was established in 2022 in memory of Logan and to honor Schoterman, a two-time NCAA champion and 1972 Olympian who served as Kent State's throws coach during Logan's final two collegiate years. The recipient of the scholarship will be recognized along with Schoterman and members of the Logan family prior to the men's weight throw.
PREVIEWING THE FLASHES
Kent State swept the weekly Mid-American Conference men's athlete of the week awards following standout performances at the season-opening Al Campbell Invitational last Friday. Sean Callahan Jr. won the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.66 seconds that ranks second in program history and 26th in the country this season, while Donovan Crawford opened with a conference-best mark of 62'-8" in the weight throw.
The Golden Flashes had five athletes post national top 100 marks. Kyla Taress is entered in the pole vault and joins Crawford as the only two who will compete in the same event this week. Taress cleared the bar at a personal-best height of 13'-1.75" and sits 54th in the country.
Additionally, the weight throw area will be named in Schoterman's honor each at this meet each year.
NEXT UP FOR KENT STATE
The Golden Flashes will head to Notre Dame next weekend for the Meyo Invitational on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.
