
Golden Flashes Complete Series Sweep of UMass

KENT – Kent State Softball (11-11, 3-0 MAC) completed a three-game Mid-American Conference sweep of the University of Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon with a 10-6 victory at Devine Diamond. With the win the Golden Flashes open conference play unbeaten for the first time in three seasons.
The Golden Flashes jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Aaralyn Nogay led off with a single to center field and stole second. After Brynn Libler reached on a fielder's choice, Caleigh Shaulis delivered a two-run double to left field to score both Nogay and Libler and give Kent State a 2-0 lead
The Minutewomen cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a brief 3-2 lead. The Flashes answered immediately in the bottom half as Ashlyn Porter singled to right field with Alex Trevena following with a two-run homer to left field to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Nogay added a bunt single and another steal before Shaulis launched a two-run home run to right center to extend the lead to 6-3.
The Golden Flashes added three more runs in the fourth inning to build a commanding 9-3 advantage. Trevena was hit by a pitch and stole second base, and Nogay drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Libler delivered a two-run single to center field to score two more. After Shaulis grounded out to advance Libler to second, Megan Claerhout drove in Libler with an RBI double to left center to push the lead to 9-3.
Kent State added one more run in the sixth inning when Libler led off with a solo home run to left field to make it 10-4.
UMass scored one unearned run in the sixth inning and added two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-6 before the Blue and Gold close it out for the sweep.
Meadow Ferri earned the win in relief, working five innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out a trio. At the plate, Shaulis went 2-for-3 a double and a blast recording four RBIs. Libler went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, Trevena finished 2-for-2 with her first career home run, and two RBIs with two stolen bases. Nogay was 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases continuing to climb the national rankings. Claerhout added a 1-for-4 effort with a double and an RBI. Porter went 1-for-4, and Quinn was 1-for-4.
Kent State last recorded a sweep to start MAC play in 2024 when they swept Ball State University on the road (March 22-23).
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State will be back in action on Tuesday, March 17 when they travel to take on Robert Morris University. A doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the second game at 4:00 p.m.
