The Kent State Herb Page men's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of the Mid-American Conference Championship at Holliday Farms, posting a 20-over par 304 as a team on a par-71 course that played tough across the field, yielding a 76.63 scoring average.
Eastern Michigan leads the team race at 4-over, with Kent State trailing fourth-place Central Michigan by four strokes. Miami (OH) is second at 12-over and Northern Illinois sits third at 13-over.
Nolan Haynes paces the Golden Flashes, tied for seventh at 3-over 74. Haynes climbed to 4-over through six holes before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 sparked his round. A bogey on the par-3 ninth sent him to the turn at 3-over 39, but he steadied with an even-par 35 on the back nine, picking up his lone back-side birdie on the par-4 13th.
Darcy Hogg is tied for 12th at 4-over 75, followed by Liam Curtis in a tie for 22nd at 6-over 77 and Christoffer Leuenhagen in a tie for 27th at 7-over 78. James Newton rounds out the Kent State scorecard tied for 42nd at 12-over 83.
Patrick Raupp of Northern Illinois leads the individual race at 2-under, with Miami's Liam Hess and Eastern Michigan's Rory O'Brien and Joshua Hess knotted at 1-under in a three-way tie for second.
