ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Kent State Field Hockey fell 1-4 against Vermont in a neutral-site game hosted by Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Despite stellar defensive stretches and a variety of strong individual performances, the Golden Flashes are still looking for their first win two weeks into the season. On the other hand, the Catamounts are undefeated thus far and are outscoring opponents by a 12-3 margin. Vermont will face No. 8 Michigan on Sunday afternoon with a possible chance to be ranked with a victory.
Vermont's strong offense hit Kent State immediately with a goal by Consu de Castro in the second minute of the contest. The Argentinian forward leads Vermont with six points and seven shots on the season.
Alicia Battistelli notched the second goal of the first period for Vermont off a solid assist from Emily Enden. Vermont held onto the 2-0 advantage heading into halftime; as well as a 7-1 shot advantage.
The Golden Flashes started playing with more tempo in the third quarter but still couldn't get really good offensive chances. Vermont's backs and midfielders defended well in the game, limiting Kent State to three shots total.
Vermont tallied two breakaway goals by Isi McMahon and Jaime Lewis to effectively put the game out of reach for Kent State. The Catamounts took the 4-0 lead into the fourth quarter and held on to win 4-1.
The Golden Flashes' lone goal came off the stick of junior midfielder Mary Kate Finnan in the 50th minute of the game. The goal got Kent State on the board and was Finnan's first collegiate career goal. Between Finnan and Livingston, both of Kent State's goals this season have been collegiate career firsts.
