THE GAME
The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge resumes for the spring semester as Kent State (3-12, 0-4 MAC) takes the short trip to Akron (7-8, 1-3 MAC) for a 1:30pm game on Saturday (Jan. 18).
This is the third year of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge. Kent State won the first two while Akron currently leads 3-2 for the 2013-14 season. The challenge is based on a point system decided by the outcomes of Kent State-Akron matchups in 15 varsity sports.
The Golden Flashes battled hard against Ohio in their last contest, but ultimately fell 59-76. Kent State lead 32-28 at the half after a 50% field-goal shooting performace and out-rebounded the Bobcats 25-13. However, Ohio went on a 16-2 run after halftime to take the lead and secure the victory. Overall, Kent State had 44 rebounds while Ohio was only able to grab 16. 22 of the Golden Flashes' came on the offensive glass that resulted in 16 second chance points. Amber Dunlap set career marks with 19 points and seven rebounds in the game. Ashley Evans had 12 points. Montia Johnson led the team with eight rebounds while Mikell Chinn led with four assists.
The Golden Flashes started the month of December by winning two in a row for the first time since January of the 2011-12 season. With three wins already in their keeping, they have already matched last year's win total. Their most recent victory, a 69-46 domination of Niagara, was the team's largest win-margin since December 1, 2010.
The Zips began their conference season with a 87-78 home victory against Ball State after starting out 6-5 in non-conference play. They are currently on a three-game slide after losing to Central Michigan, Bowling Green and Miami. Akron's offense has been successful this season as the team is averaging 81.7 points per game and both Rachel Tecca and Hanna Luburgh are averaging more than 23 points per game. Tecca also leads the team by averaging 8.5 rebounds and has a team-high 28 steals. Kacie Cassell leads the MAC with 89 assists.
