KENT, Ohio β Senior Hannah Faulkner's career-high four-goal game led Kent State (7-8, 4-0) past Ball State (5-9, 1-3) by a score of 6-1 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The first half ended in a deadlock after Madison Thompson drove to the net and scored 30 seconds into the game and then the Cardinals connected on a corner with ten seconds left to make it 1-1 at the break.
Kent State came back fast and furious in the second, scoring five goals in the final 35 minutes led by Faulkner's four.
The first came on a corner play four minutes in when Faulkner gave the Flashes the lead off a deflection.Β A few minutes later, fellow seniors Shannon Martin and Julia Hofmann got in on the scoring action when Hofmann fed Martin for a tally.
Faulkner found the back of the net again off another deflection on a corner play and followed up with a hat trick when she gained possession on the left side, dribbled in and shot it past the Cardinal's keeper.
The sixth goal of the day and Faulkner's fourth came with three minutes remaining.Β On a corner play, Hofmann's direct shot was deflected, then Alexis Madeira also had a shot deflected for Faulkner to connect.
Faulkner has now scored in seven-straight games, which is the third longest streak in Kent State history.Β Her four-goal day is tied for 6th most all-time.
The team finished with 32 shots in the game compared to Ball State's six and also led in corner opportunities, 14-3.Β Faulkner led with nine shots while Hofmann and Ines Delpech each had six.
With the win and Ohio's loss to Central Michigan, Kent State is now alone atop the conference standings.Β The win also clinches a berth in the Mid-American Conference Tournament that will be hosted by the Golden Flashes Nov. 7-8.
The team is back in action against another MAC opponent when they host Longwood on Sunday at 1:00p.m.
