KENT, Ohio – Kent State's (8-8, 5-0 MAC) offensive juggernaut continued this Sunday against Longwood (6-11, 2-4 MAC) as the Golden Flashes won 1-0 to stay in first place in the conference and to guarantee at least a share of the Mid-American Conference regular season title.
Despite a low score total, Kent State had an abundance of opportunities with 29 shots in the game, including 20 in the second half, while the Golden Flashes' defense held the Lancers to just seven shots with just one in the opening 35 minutes.
Hannah Faulkner scored in her 8th consecutive game to give Kent State the edge. The lone goal came at the 24-minute mark off a feed from Silvia Figa Malgosa. Faulkner's eight-game goal scoring streak places her in a tie for second longest in Kent State history, matching Debbie Bell's streak from the 2009 season.
The Golden Flashes also led in penalty corners in the match, earning ten opportunities compared to just three for the Lancers.
Ines Delpech led the way with six shots on the day. Alexis Madeira, Julia Hofmann and Madison Thompson all contributed with four each; more than half of those came on goal. Andrea Rinehart, despite facing only a few shots, earned the shutout in goal.
Kent State's undefeated conference season and an outright championship will be on the line next weekend when the team travels to second-place Central Michigan for a Saturday match. The regular season will end on Nov. 2 at Northwestern before the Golden Flashes return home Nov. 7-8 to host the MAC Tournament as either the #1 or #2 seed.
