KENT, Ohio – Kent State (9-10) protected home turf Friday afternoon as the hosts of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament by besting Miami (7-12) 3-1.
The Golden Flashes' attack came fast and furious, as they have all season, with three shots in the opening 30 seconds of the match. Two minutes into the game, MAC Player of the Year Hannah Faulkner got off another shot that was saved but Madison Thompson was ready nearby and stuck the deflection in the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.
At the 15:37 mark, MAC Freshman of the Year Ines Delpech rifled a direct shot on a corner to make it a 2-0 game. Silvia Figa Malgosa and Alayna Harris earned assists on the play.
Shortly after, Miami was able to get on the board as Brianna Stahl dribbled down to the left side of the net and snuck a goal in past Kent State keeper Andrea Rinehart.
In the second half, Thompson gave Kent State another two-goal lead with her second of the day. After dribbling in front of the net, she took her own shot deflection and scored to make it a final of 3-1.
The Golden Flashes had 19 shots in the game while the RedHawks finished with eight. They also had an advantage in penalty corners, 9-5.
Faulkner led with four shots in the match while Julia Hofmann, Krysti Lober, Thompson and Delpech all had three. Rinehart finished with three saves.
No. 2 seed Kent State will now play No. 4 seed Ohio in the championship game on Saturday at 2:00p.m. The Bobcats advanced after a 2-1 victory that came by way of a shootout over the No. 1 seed Central Michigan.
