KENT, Ohio – Kent State couldn't finish the regular season, clinch the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, honor its seniors or head into the Mid-American Conference Tournament any better way than they did Saturday night in a 19-0 victory over Akron.
The Golden Flashes amassed 11 extra-base hits and totaled 14 on the night. Every starter in the lineup got a hit and every one either had a run scored or a RBI in the game. Not to be outshone, Kent State's pitching arsenal two-hit Akron while the Golden Flashes defense did not commit an error in one of the most complete games of the season.
"It's a good feeling tonight," Head Coach Jeff Duncan said. "For the last three weeks we've battled some really tough games and to respond after the close win last night like we did today, especially offensively…it was good see our offense click like it did.
"The seven seniors played really well tonight. They all got an opportunity to play and they all did a really good job. That's what senior day is all about."
A 42-minute 1st inning got the whole thing started. Michael Clark gave up a leadoff walk to start the game but then got a pop out and two groundouts to give the inning over to his offense who scored nine runs in the opening frame.
Three doubles, two triples and a single raked in the nine runs. 14 batters came to the plate in that time.
Kent State added three on in the third when senior Cody Koch cleared the bases with a double. Four runs came home in the 4th on a Curtis Olvey single and a three-run homerun by Zach Beckner, the first of his young career.
As if that wasn't enough, Conner Simonetti doubled in a run in the 7th after entering the game as a pinch hitter two innings earlier. The Golden Flashes' final two runs came in the 8th on a double by senior Jon Wilson and a hard hit ball by senior Troy Summers that the Zips shortstop mishandled.
Senior Clark was nearly unhittable in his last start at Schoonover Stadium. He went five innings for the win with one hit, two walks and three strikeouts. John Birkbeck, senior Josh Pierce, senior Spencer Bryant and Brian Clark were all sharp in relief, allowing just one other hit in the game with no walks and no hit batters.
Kent State ends the regular season with a 32-21 overall record and 16-11 record in conference play. They will enter the MAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 Bowling Green on Wednesday at 1:00pm at All-Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
"We're excited," Duncan said. "Tomorrow we're practicing and we're going to turn the page and start working towards Bowling Green. It will be a great game, I'm sure, and we're excited to play Bowling Green because we didn't play great against them a couple weeks ago. We're just going to take this one game at a time.
"We're looking to take the momentum we've built these last two days into the tournament," Duncan added.
