Flashes Fall in Another Overtime Heartbreaker

KENT, Ohio – For the majority of 81 minutes of play on Saturday, Kent State (2-4) stood strong against No. 19 Michigan State (3-2), but as the day before also went, the Golden Flashes ultimately lost the match 4-3 in overtime.

Kent State scored first 13 minutes in when Ines Delpech took a shot and Hannah Faulkner put the rebound in the back of the net to go up 1-0. The lead increased four minutes later when Alexis Maderia scored on a corner opportunity that was set up nicely by Alayna Harris and Julia Hofmann.

Michigan State was able to get a tally in before the break, scoring 21 minutes into the game to be down 2-1 at halftime.

The Golden Flashes got a two-goal lead back when Hannah Faulkner once again scored on a beautiful shot that soared into the high corner of the net. However, the Spartans came back, scoring at the 57 and 60 minutes marks to send the game into extra time.

Both teams had a good opportunity to end the game in regulation as Kent State had a corner opportunity with a minute to play. On the initial advantage, a Spartan defender left early to give the Golden Flashes an even stronger chance at a goal on a corner play. However, a shot by Hofmann was barely blocked just before being a goal. After the corner, the Spartans drove down the field and tried to get a shot off, but the horn sounded just before goalkeeper Andrea Rinehart made a save.

In overtime, Faulkner had an early look but her shot sailed wide. With 81:24 played, Michigan State was able to end it and take the 4-3 win.

Kent State was the leader statistically, as they had 29 shots and 12 corners to Michigan State's 22 shots and six corners; the Spartans did not earn a penalty corner until the second half.

Hofmann led the team with nine shots while Faulkner had six. Rinehart had a strong match in net with eight saves.

The Golden Flashes return to action next Sunday, September 21 when they host Michigan at Murphy-Mellis Field at noon.
