DEKALB, Ill. – Kent State (3-13, 1-4) kept it close in the first half but could not outduel the Huskies (6-8, 2-2) Saturday afternoon, leaving behind a 66-49 loss in Dekalb.
The Golden Flashes were slow out of the gate, shooting just 20% while committing four turnovers before the first media break of the game at 15:59. Kent State righted the ship, thanks to a nice effort on the defensive effort that held NIU to 2-of-8 shooting for a span and a 3:06 minute scoring drought leading up to the under-eight media timeout.
The Huskies were able to break away a bit to head into halftime leading 32-25. The Golden Flashes never trailed by more than seven points in the half while being within a field goal for the majority of the way.
Northern Illinois began the first half with the ball in its hands and started things off with jumper and a three-point field goal to push its lead into double-digits for the first time of the day.
Kent State did not help itself out of the break, going on a scoring drought of its own, including a five-minute span of not scoring a field goal. The Huskies pushed on to complete the 66-49 victory.
The two team's final field goal percentages were similar, with the home team shooting 37.3% and the visitors 35.2%, but NIU sunk five from deep compared to one from KSU. The Golden Flashes had another good performance on the boards, outrebounding the opponent 41-34.
CiCi Shannon continued to play well with her third-straight double-double and fourth of the season. She collected 13 points and 16 rebounds in the contest while also blocking four shots. Jordan Korinek netted a career-high in points with 15.
After a mid-week bye, Kent State will return home on Saturday, Jan. 24 as they host Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 330-672-2244.
