Golden Flashes Drop Five-Setter to Sycamores in Golden Flashes Classic Opener

KENT, Ohio โ A resilient Kent State volleyball team saw its offense go cold late the decisive fifth set of a 3-2 loss to Indiana State (29-27, 21-25, 15-25, 25-17, 10-15) in the first match of the Golden Flashes Classic Friday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (2-3) were paced offensively at the pins by senior Kelly Hutchison and sophomore Kelsey Bittinger. Hutchison matched her career-best with 22 kills to go with 4 blocks, while Bittinger totaled 17 kills and 21 digs for her first double-double of the young season. Freshman Amy Kober added nine kills. Junior Katarina Kojic displayed her versatility from the setter position by recording 36 assists, 12 digs and a team-high 3 aces. Sophomore Brittney Jakscht split setting duties with Kojic and finished with 23 assists.
Defensively, sophomore Challen Geraghty set the tone with 30 digs, while freshman Sam Jones contributed 9 digs out of the back row. Senior Bridget Wilhelm and junior Drew Norberg each had five blocks to lead the Flashes.
After forcing a fifth set, Kent State recorded a .029 hitting percentage in the final frame and committed four critical hitting errors down the stretch to aid in the Sycamores scoring the final six points of the match.ย
Kent State returns to action at the M.A.C. Center on Saturday against Albany at 11 a.m. and then concludes the Golden Flashes Classic at 7 p.m. against Oakland.
